The lap time that named a car

In 2007, Porsche's motorsport department in Weissach began work on a faster GT2.

The target

A Nissan GT-R had lapped the Nordschleife in around 7:27. That time became the project's code: 727.

The approach

Start from the GT2, add power, take out weight. Andreas Preuninger, who ran Porsche's GT cars at the time, has said it began as an unofficial project alongside the regular program.

The result

Porsche reported a lap of 7:18 by test driver Timo Kluck, nine seconds inside the target. The car was presented to German dealers in Leipzig in May 2010.

The engine is the GT2's 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged Mezger flat-six, a design with its roots in Porsche's GT1 race car, reworked here for another 90 hp. No road-going 911 before it had more.

There is no all-wheel drive to share the load and no dual-clutch gearbox to manage it. The power goes through a six-speed manual with a short-throw lever, and with Porsche Stability Management switched off, how much of it reaches the road is up to the driver.

Porsche quoted 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and a top track speed of 205 mph. The torque says more about how it drives: all 516 lb-ft are available between 2,250 and 5,500 rpm.

Outside

The hood, mirror housings and rear wing lip are carbon fiber. Together with a polycarbonate rear window and rear side windows, they help bring the RS 154 lb below the GT2. On this car the hood is left in bare carbon against GT Silver paint, and with the wheels painted black, the yellow calipers of the ceramic brakes are what catch the eye.

Inside

Adaptive sport seats in black leather and red Alcantara, specified in place of the standard carbon buckets, with red seat belts. The Additional Interior Carbon Package and Porsche Exclusive trim add a thicker steering wheel in black and red Alcantara, crested headrests and an aluminum footrest. A GT2 RS set up for the road.

The perfect beast

In 2011, Andreas Preuninger left a handwritten note beneath this car's carbon hood, addressed to its first owner by name: "I hope we built the perfect beast for you!"

It was delivered new through Porsche of Downtown L.A., and the original window sticker survives, recording all $259,995 of its specification.

A Carfax report and an inspection report are available from Young Motorcars on request.
